OUR LADY OF BOGOLYUBOVO AND SAINTS ATTENDING
CloseSuch icons as Our Lady of Bogolyubovo with Saints Attending were called The Prayer of Our Lady for the People in ancient Russia of the first third of the 16th century. For the first time, the image of the Virgin portrayed full-length with a scroll in her hand praying to the Saviour was depicted on a 12th-century icon in honour of her miraculous apparition to Andrey Bogolyubsky. Among those standing before the Virgin, petitioning her for protection and patronage, are depicted now the Rostov and Moscow saints, as on this icon, now the brethren of the Solovetsky Monastery headed by its founders, namely Saints Zosima and Sabbatius, as on the icons of 1545 and 1566-1567.
