SHRINE OF PATRIARCH HERMOGENES
CloseIn 1653 Patriarch Nikon transferred the relics of Patriarch Hermogenes (died in 1612) to the Assumption Cathedral. Hermogenes, like his predecessor Patriarch Job, firmly opposed “Latinism” of the impostors Dmitry the First and Dmitry the Second. He appealed to Muscovites not to swear allegiance to the King of Poland Wladyslaw IV unless he converted to Orthodoxy. Thus, the Saint was imprisoned in the Chudov monastery, where he starved to death. Patriarch Hermogenes was glorified in 1913; the relics were enshrined and placed in the canopy made by Dmitry Sverchkov.
