ST SERGIUS OF RADONEZH, SURROUNDED BY SCENES FROM HIS LIFE

Close

St Sergius of Radonezh, surrounded by Scenes from his LifeThe late 15th and early 16th-century icon of St Sergius of Radonezh, located in the western part of the iconostasis, is connected to the circle of icons created in Dionysy's workshop. The image of the holy ascetic is full of meekness and humility. St Sergius was the founder of the Trinity Sergius Lavra, which served as a model for his disciples for creating many monasteries throughout Russia and inspired the heroes of the Kulikovo Battle in their feat of arms. Marginal scenes from his life emphasize the saint's humility of mind as exemplified by two scenes depicting his raising of a boy and that the saint forbade the child's father to tell about the incident as a miracle. The style and creative solution of the icon, with its restrained, albeit brighten up colouring, match the image.
